Abstract

Deafness is a condition of hearing loss which results in a person being unable to perceive various stimuli, especially through the sense of hearing. For deaf people who act as parents and still have babies, of course they have difficulty hearing their baby's voice when they cry and they are not in a position near the baby. Therefore, we need a technology that can make it easier for deaf parents to know that their baby is crying and can calm their baby, even though they are not near the baby. This research aims to design a prototype of a baby crying sound detection tool for deaf parents based on the Internet of Things that can be connected to an Android application and can play songs to temporarily calm a crying baby. The prototype of this tool is designed with a baby crying sound detection system based on the NodeMCU ESP8266 and a connected Android application. This baby crying sound detector uses a sound sensor as a sender which will send data to Firebase. The Android application as the recipient reads the conditions from the information on Firebase. This communication can determine the status of the baby's crying in real time, provide vibrating notifications on the smartphone, and activate the sleep song feature to calm the baby while in the room using the mini DFPlayer module. The test was carried out by playing a recording of the sound of a baby crying in a quiet room. Based on the results of the tests that have been carried out, if the ADC (Analog to Digital Converter) value of the sound of a baby's cry that is detected is less than 640 (the specified setpoint value/calibration result value) or 42,144 dB and the equivalent of 3,125 volts, then the baby's condition is declared "safe". However, if the ADC value of the detected sound of the baby's cry exceeds the predetermined setpoint value, then the baby's condition is declared "crying".
